Red Sox WPA through 5/3/06
The Blue Jays tried to give this one away, but we wouldn't take it. Down by one in the bottom of the ninth. Mohr strikes out. Game over. But no! Zaun can't hang on, and Mohr takes first. From a WPA perspective, that's -0.054 for Mohr on the K, and +0.108 for "Opponent's Errors" to put him on first. Willie Harris, channeling Dave Roberts, takes off for second after Varitek flails mightily at the first two pitches he sees. Harris reaches second easily (+0.043 WPA), and then scampers on to third as Zaun's throw rolls into the outfield (+0.016 WPA for "Opponent's Errors"). Tek's now down 0-2, and he watches a fastball down the middle to end the game (-0.168 WPA, a truly lousy at-bat). "Opponent's Errors" is now our leading WPA category for the season, which doesn't bode well...
